The two ends of the headband are riveted to the helmet, near the chinstraps.
An embossed brass ornament representing a grenade surrounded by palm leaves (Height of this ornament 8 cm; maximum width 7.5 cm) is fixed in the middle of the headband.
Chinstraps composed of a strong leather chinstrap covered with a decreasing series of intertwined brass rings. Length of the chinstrap 20 cm; length of the part covered with rings 14.5 cm. Width of the top link: 4.6 cm. Width of the lower link: 2.2 cm. In the middle of each chinstrap, a flat brass hook is intended to hold the rings. The right chinstrap ends in a brass chain and hook, the left chinstrap ends in a simple hook.
Stamped iron rosette in a round shape (Ø 5.5 cm) with a prominent outer molding and impressed in the center with a radiant sun. The fins are stamped in relief with an acanthus leaf frame and in the middle with a laurel branch, and in the center with laurel branches. Each fin is fixed to the helmet by two half-spherical headed iron screws. Maximum height of the fins 13.2 cm.
The mask serves to join the two fins in the front to which it is welded by its edges adorned with fillets. It ends squarely at the top and at the bottom by a lamp base that fits under the headband and is passed through by the same screw. (Width of the mask at the top 3.5 cm; in the middle 2.2 cm; at the bottom 4 cm). It is fixed at the bottom by the screw at the top of the headband.
Apart from the welding with the mask, the two fins are connected to each other by a white iron partition welded.
Scarlet horsehair plume mounted on a steel wire. It extends about 9 cm beyond the crest.
Black waxed sheepskin inner cap cut into wolf teeth, each adorned with a metal eyelet.
Total height of the helmet 40 cm.
France.
Second Empire.
Very good condition except for the incomplete and torn lining on the inside.
This helmet is a troop model with an officer-type headband, probably for a non-commissioned officer (?). The absence of markings on the helmet and a number on the plume suggest a helmet probably never put into service.
