OFFICER'S DRAGOON HELMET, model 1872 modified 1874, Third Republic. 33344
Pressed metal helmet with a balance pole, nickel-plated and hammered, pierced on the top with three vent holes. Height of the helmet 11.5 cm.
Visor inclined at 53 degrees below a horizontal plane passing through the junction of the visor and the helmet. Edged with a 7.1 mm wide gilded copper circle placed astride its edges and fixed at the ends by a rivet. Underside of the visor in black waxed Morocco leather. Visor width 5.5 cm.
Neck guard composed of: a circular band on its flat surface, welded under the posterior edge of the band it extends, with three golden brass half-spherical head nails riveted inside; a second concave band, forming a groove, with rounded angles and welded inside, at the bottom of the first one. Like the visor, the neck guard is edged with a 7 mm wide gilded copper trim, placed astride. It is lined with ivory calf leather.
Gilded copper headband stamped with a flaming grenade surrounded by laurel leaves, adherent to the helmet. Its base rests on the visor and its ends are riveted to the helmet in the part hidden by the rosette of the chinstrap. Height of the headband at the front 6.5 cm.
Each chinstrap is made up of 10 ornamental copper cut-out and relief-stamped laurel leaf scales, decreasing in width (max width 4.2 cm, min width 2 cm). These scales are fixed with flattened wire staples on a leather core lined with black velvet. At the other end, black varnished calf skin chinstrap. Upper scale of each chinstrap attached to the helmet by means of a lock and a circular rosette stamped with relief laurel leaves, Ø 5.3 cm.
The helmet is surmounted by a gilded copper crest composed of two fins, a mask, and a covering.
The fins, vertically placed with a distance of 4.9 cm in front and 3.3 cm at the back, have the shape of a convex curvilinear triangle at the top and connect to the helmet with a concave base forming a scalloped edge.
This edge is fixed to the helmet with 4 round-headed drop-shaped copper screws stopped inside the helmet by square copper nuts.
The fins are decorated with palm leaves and a border at their top edge; the edge is decorated with water leaves, all stamped in relief.
A tinplate connects the upper edges of the fins, fixing their spacing.
The mask serving as the front connection between the two fins through a solder, bears a relief-stamped head of Medusa. The covering, also stamped, represents the continuation of the hair of the head of Medusa with intertwined snakes.
Black-dyed horsehair mane, mounted on a nourished strong cowhide sole, in which the hair is assembled with tinned brass wires with a piece of sheepskin glued with strong adhesive on the assembly; the space left between the two rows of hair is filled with a braid starting from the top and following the curve of the crest to its junction with the helmet. Mane length approximately 90 cm.
Gilded copper stamped plumet holder, H 3.5 cm, forming a square section socket, fixed obliquely and engraved with a laurel leaf on each of its faces.
Black leather interior lining, cut with seven gold-plated wolf's teeth, each fitted with a metal eyelet.
