Prisoner of War in England. LOT OF TWO LETTERS FROM SOLDIER JOSEPH REY PIROLLE, A PRISONER IN PORCHESTER, ADDRESSED TO THE MAYOR OF GRENOBLE TO OBTAIN NEWS OF HIS PARENTS, JANUARY 29, 1812, AND SEPTEMBER 12, 1813. 18910-34

Prisoner of war in England. LOT OF TWO LETTERS FROM SOLDIER JOSEPH REY PIROLLE, PRISONER AT PORCHESTER, ADDRESSED TO THE MAYOR OF GRENOBLE TO OBTAIN NEWS OF HIS PARENTS, January 29, 1812 and September 12, 1813. 18910-34

- "Porchester" January 29, 1812.
This first letter is difficult to read and understand as it is written phonetically.
Sent by soldier Rey Pirolle, corporal of the 2nd Light Infantry Regiment, prisoner at Porchester.
With address "To Mr / the mayor of Grenoble / Department of Isère / In Grenoble" "France".
"Mr. Mayor,
Please excuse me if I dare to take the liberty of writing you these few lines as a letter because being a native of the region and having no other resource than to address you since it has been three years that I am a prisoner of war on April 11th and it has been 16 months since I am in England. I have sent 12 letters to my father and godfather without receiving any in return... it must be presumed that they have abandoned me, there is no other explanation. I will also tell you that since April 1808 I have not received any news from my parents.
During our entrance into Spain, I was unable to write earlier due to the communication lines being cut, but I have been writing since I am in English hands.
It has been 16 months and certainly since that time, I have not neglected to write.
I will also tell you, Mr. Mayor, that I gave power of attorney while in Napoleonville in Brittany in the year 1808 to my father... and as I fear he may be deceased and that I have a stepmother who may believe that I will never return...
So, Mr. Mayor, I kindly ask you to write to me as soon as possible and try to send something to help alleviate my unhappy situation.
Here is the address of my father: Mr. Reypirolle, chamois worker, Rue du Boeuf, house number 5 in Grenoble.
Here is my address: No. 8278, Reypirolle, corporal of the 2nd Light Infantry Regiment, prisoner at Porchester on the river of Portsmouth."
Two-page letter, 3 pages of writing, address on the 4th page.
Dimensions: 18.3 cm x 15 cm. Fair condition, folding marks.

- Porchester, September 12, 1813.
The second letter is written in perfect French and spelling, in a beautiful handwriting (probably written by an educated comrade).
Addressed "To Mr / Mr. Mayor / of Grenoble, Member / of the Legion of Honor / Department of Isère / In Grenoble"
This letter was probably not delivered to the recipient as it contains a handwritten note on the first page "sent to the Police Count".
"Sir,
How sweet it is to receive news from one's parents when one has been deprived of it for too long, but it is also very painful to be abandoned to one's unhappy fate. Yet, Sir, this is the situation in which I have found myself for the past five years. Allow me, Sir, to implore this kindness that has always characterized you. Moreover, knowing the pleasure you take in helping the unfortunate, I am convinced that you will look favorably upon the request I am making.
I have not received news from my parents for a very long time, although I have been writing to them continuously, fearing that they may have passed away as I cannot imagine the reason for such a great delay. I dare to ask you to please relieve my anxiety by giving me news of them. This distinguished service that I expect from you will earn my gratitude that will only end with my life. I am, Sir, in hopeful anticipation.
P.S. My father and mother are named André Rey Pirolle and Jeanne Veillet, Rue du Boeuf, No. 5, chamois worker."
"The most humble and submissive of your servants Joseph Rey Pirolle, corporal."
"My address to Mr. Joseph Rey Pirolle, corporal, 4th company, 1st Battalion, 2nd Light Infantry Regiment, prisoner of war registered under No. 8278."
Two-page letter. Dimensions: 18.3 cm x 15 cm.
Good condition, folding marks, a tear with loss on the right edge of page 3-4 (out of text).
