Fully handwritten letter, with the header "Prisoners of War," "on board the Pontons de Chatham, England, April 27, 1812." It is addressed to His Excellency the Duke of Feltre, Minister of War.
One of the signatories is L. VATABLES (?), second in command of the 66th Line Regiment, recipient of the Legion of Honor.
The second is Colonel LE BERTRE, former commander of the St Pierre district, Martinique. Recipient of the Legion of Honor.
These two officers were captured by the English and sent to Alresford (Hampshire) from where they managed to escape. But betrayed, they were arrested again on the Kent coast, robbed of their money and "thrown into horrible dungeons, mingled with soldiers, sailors and even negroes, subjected to daily insults, plagued by vermin [...].
We beseech you, Your Excellency, to consider our misfortune, to rescue us from these horrible hulks and, if possible, return us to our homeland. This would be more than giving us back our lives; we would dedicate our entire existence to the service of the Emperor. [...]".
