Prisoners of war. 2nd Battalion of the Martinique Chasseurs. SIGNED LETTER FROM THE OFFICERS OF THIS BATTALION, TAKEN PRISONER BY THE ENGLISH AND RELEASED, WISHING TO BE REINTEGRATED INTO A REGIMENT IN FRANCE, 1794. 18910-28
Handwritten letter signed by five officers of the 2nd Battalion of the Martinique Chasseurs, addressed to the "Representatives of the people composing the Committee of Public Safety." These officers, taken prisoners during the siege of Martinique, were sent to England, and upon their return to France, they wished to demonstrate their courage in France, a country where they are familiar with the localities. Stamp in red ink "COMMITTEE OF PUBLIC SAFETY / 5 COMPLEMENTARY."
"Officers of the 2nd battalion of the Martinique Chasseurs, appointed by General Rochambeau's patent of August 16, 1793 (V.CS.), we were taken prisoner during the siege of this colony by the English; embarked on February 18, 1794 and taken to England from where we were only sent back on the last floral day, a time when we landed in Le Havre.
We will not recall the details of the siege of Martinique [...] The National Convention decreed that we have rightfully deserved of the homeland [...].
Our battalion, or a large part of it, arrived at Brest and Port Malo: it was sent back to Guadeloupe, under a different name, by a second expedition ordered by the government. We regret not being in France at that time to follow our fellow soldiers in a country whose localities we know and where we could effectively demonstrate our courage.
Arriving in Le Havre too late, a War Council was held for us and decided that we would be provided for at the 106th Regiment until our fate was determined. Nothing has changed for us yet. Unable to bear the inactivity in which we live, two of us are in Paris by government leave and have just been provided for in Franciscan by the 9th Commission, they are tasked by us to seek employment [...].
Greetings and Fraternity.
