BIOGRAPHY:
Louis PATERNOSTRE, born in Brussels on October 16, 1824, and died in Ixelles on March 23, 1879, was a Belgian artist known for his genre scenes, battle and historical paintings, portraits, and also as a sculptor and lithographer.
He studied art at the Royal Academy of Fine Arts in Mons under the guidance of Étienne Omer Wauquier and Anton van Ysendyck. He also trained with François Édouard Picot, a French neoclassical painter, and at the School of Fine Arts in Paris.
Like Théodore Géricault, he was known for his paintings of horses and battle panoramas, often depicting historical events and prominent figures.
He exhibited at the Fine Arts Exhibition in Brussels in 1854 and the triennial exhibitions in Mons in 1858, 1868, and 1872, as well as at the Salon des Artistes Français in 1855, 1859, and 1861, the Salon de Paris in 1866, and the Ghent Exhibition in 1868.
Following his death in Ixelles on March 23, 1879, he was buried at the cemetery in Mons.
