JAPANESE ARMOR OF TETSU KURO URASHI NURI GOMAIDŌ GUSOKU TYPE, EDO PERIOD, Mid-19th century. 29924R
Set comprising a helmet (Kabuto), mask (Menpō), cuirass (Dō), apron with two reinforced thigh guards (Haidate Kawara), shoulder guards (Sōde), pair of arm guards (Yoshitsune Kōte), and a knee guard (Sune Ate).
The helmet is of the rokujuni ken tetsu sabiji sujibachi Kabuto type, with a forged crown (bashi) made of steel strips with converging edges at its top opening (Tehen), retaining its internal lining of fabric bordered with leather. The visor (mabisashi) is made of plain steel with a piece attached for a central ornament (maedate). The neck guard (shikoro) consists of four black lacquered plates held together and hinged by a blue lacing. The side wings (fukigaeshi) are adorned with cherry blossom motifs crafted in copper.
The Menpō mask is of the ressei type, made of lacquered iron imitating rusted iron. The nose is attached by two clasps. The inside of the mask is lacquered red. The throat guard (yo-dare kake) has dark blue silk lacing.
The cuirass is of the yokohagi okegawa Dō type, held by rigid straps covered with interlocking plate fabrics, lacquered black, flexible and light, connected by dark blue silk cord lacing. The skirt (kusazuri) consists of black lacquered plates laced together with dark blue silk cords.
The apron with two reinforced thigh guards (Haidate Kawara) consists of panels covering the left and right thighs, made of wide fabric strips consisting of a thick canvas lining, covered with a silk outer fabric with "leji" patterns of foliage and red flowers. At the upper part of the panels, there are approximately 10cm long cuts called "Muchisashi" made in the middle of each section, for the placement of other armor elements, bordered equidistantly by two printed tan leather strips called "Egawa", with floral motifs and kanji characters.
At the lower part, there is a laminar construction of slightly curved lacquered rectangular metal plates, with a top and bottom rounded in the shape of traditional tiles called "Kawara", of identical shapes and sizes, overlapping closely side by side, and laced together with small crossed dark blue silk cords. Lined on the back with dark blue cotton fabric.
Secured at the waist with a tie, "Koshi himo."
Shoulder guards (Tosei Sōde) consist of an upper plate known as the crown plate "Kanmuri Ita", covered with leather. The plate is bordered with a decorative band called "Fukurin", here made of brown felt with printed motifs and gilt brass plates. At the back, a leather cord connects the "Sode" to the shoulder straps "Watagami".
This is followed by metal strips coated with a lacquer called "Kozane", with the last strip covered with leather and rows of colored fabric circles. Each strip is connected by wide silk cord strands, forming a "Sugake" lacing pattern, allowing good articulation.
The arm guards (Yoshitsune Kōte) were originally worn in memory of Minamoto no Yoshitsune, a samurai and general from the Heian and Kamakura period, 1159-1189.
A wide and long band of deep blue silk fabric. The inner side of the strip is pierced with small holes for the passage of a silk cord to connect the two ends and keep the guard on the forearm. The outer side is covered with a fine mesh of metal rings, known as "kagomegata-gusari," made of hundreds of small brown lacquered steel circles linked together to form multiple squares.
This type of "Kote" is characterized by metal protection plates on the forearm in the form of splints called "Shino-kote", here with three splints on the upper arm referred to as "Ikada", each about 5 cm long arranged in a zigzag pattern, wide-spaced and closely buttoned.
Elbow disk, in the shape of a gourd known as "Hyôtan Gane" or gourd plate, composed of a curved and ribbed metal plate framed by four equally curved and ribbed rectangular pieces, called "Ikada" luminous rafts.
Phalanx protection in a D shape referred to as "Tekkô".
At the top part, there is a lacquered steel strip "Kanmuri ita", pierced with two holes for the passage of a cord and two horn toggles called "Kohaze" for attaching the guard to the shoulder straps called "Watagami". Wrist ties.
A knee guard (Sune Ate), a wide band of deep blue silk fabric with metal protection splints in the form of shin guards called "Shino-kote", connected by a fine mesh of metal rings known as "kagomegata-gusari," made of hundreds of small brown lacquered steel circles linked together to form multiple squares. On the upper edge, a decorative band, here made of brown felt with printed motifs.
