Cavalry Colonel Baron André Charles Merda (also known as Meda) 1773-1812
Well known during the Revolution when he was a gendarme, he was wounded by a gunshot to the jaw of Maximilien Robespierre during the night of 9 to 10 Thermidor (July 27, 1794). The next day, on July 28, the angel of terror was guillotined.
Meda, with his bravery and intelligence in combat, would become one of the Heroes of the Empire's light cavalry.
Signed autograph letter (twice) in his capacity as Colonel of the 1st Regiment of Chasseurs à cheval, Light Cavalry Division of General Montbrun, written at the Bivouac under Zamorn on June 28, At Lettowitz in Moravia on July 22, 1809, to Count Daru, Lieutenant-General of the Army. Printed letterhead with his rank and position, vignette of the Imperial arms. 1 and 1/2 pages, 22x36.
After the battles of Amberg, Thann; Eckmühl, Neumarck, Raab... and shortly after the battle of Wagram (as mentioned in the postscript), Meda requests the General Intendant of the Grand Army:
"I have the honor to address to your Excellency the list of losses that the officers of my Regiment have inflicted on the enemy, in Bavaria, Austria, and Hungary; they are significant, but always on the enemy, pressing him closely, his fire has caused us harm everywhere; there are several officers who had captured horses killed, fatally wounded under them, who are not included in the lists approved by the Generals of Brigade and Division. The horses that the officers have lost were of a higher value than what is reimbursed to them, so that they do not lose everything, I would ask if it is possible for you to reimburse them in cash as quickly as possible...."
After Wagram, on the same letter, Meda adds: "... I am attaching to the lists of losses in Bavaria and Hungary, that of the losses incurred on the left bank of the Danube in the recent battles..."
In the margin of the document, authorization for a reimbursement of 23000 francs is accepted, subject to the approval of the Major-General.
