AUTOGRAPH LETTER OF CAPTAIN OF THE LINE PIERRE-RENÉ-MARIE, COUNT DE VAUGIRAUD DE ROSNAY *, Les Sables d'Olonne, January 9, 1785. 32718

Before the start of the letter, a handwritten note signed "Fouquet":
"The Captain ... not in compliance with the inspection. The shipowner has deposited the wages due to the absentees and deserters. Mr. Vassal has reimbursed the advances made to the former, but a receipt is required from you before I can proceed with the operation. I cannot pay anything without the King's orders."

Body of the letter:
"Mr. Servanteau, Sir, captain of the ship La Jeune Thérèse, finds himself in the position of having to seek your kindness to have a sum of 16 ts reimbursed to him because his shipowner did not submit the necessary documents to the offices during the crew's inspection of said Servanteau, the attached certificates signed by Messrs. Puilly(?) and Toscan, the first class commissioner at the port of ... and the second Vice-Consul of France in Boston. The aforementioned Servanteau, having found the certificates at his home, is demanding the 16 ts that the shipowners withheld from him in accordance with the order of the commissioner of your department regarding ordinances. ... the markings on the list of his crew, indicating the three deserters to whom he had made the aforementioned advances, and confirmed as signatories, by MM. Juilly and Toscan, Mr. Servanteau knowing how keen you are on helping and approving payments myself, often when I have had the honor of seeing you in Brest, solicits you to kindly do him justice. He is a good sailor, a man of good family, but not very fortunate.
