The military uniforms during the Restoration period are among the most luxurious and diverse that the French Army has ever worn. A period often overlooked by authors, it nonetheless remains a pivotal era in French history and a rich and endless source for collectors of military items, figurine enthusiasts, and lovers of ancient costumes.
Auguste, Louis Victor de Moltzheim (1822-1881). A talented and precise artist, he created numerous series of watercolor drawings and plates on the uniforms of the Armies of the Restoration and the Second Empire; his interest in this field likely stemmed from his military career. A unique work of exceptional quality and importance. To achieve this, the Editions du Canonnier worked closely with their printer for over six months, conducting numerous experiments to ensure subscribers an exceptional result in faithfully reproducing the watercolors of Captain Moltzheim.
This book, the most comprehensive on the subject, faithfully reproduces in full page 612 original unpublished watercolor illustrations, thus depicting all the troops of the line army and the Royal Guard:
• Foot troops of the line: Departmental Legions, Infantry, Sedentary Companies, Discipline Companies, Colonial Battalions, Swiss Infantry, Hohewlohe Legion, Light Legions, Light Infantry, Corsican Chasseur Battalions.
• Line cavalry troops: Mounted Chasseurs, Hussars, Veterinarians, Dragoons, Cuirassiers, Monsieur's Carabiniers, Carabiniers, Artillery, Artillery Workers, Sedentary Gunners, Artillery Train, Engineers Train, Military Cart Drivers Train, Engineers, Royal Gendarmerie of Corsica, Gendarmerie Auxiliaries, Royal Gendarmerie, Royal Gendarmerie of Paris, Royal Gendarmerie of the Departments.

A monumental work undertaken by Auguste de Moltzheim in 1875. He worked on it continuously until his death in 1881. The sources used were: regulations and plates by Bardin, regulations inserted in the Military Journal, ordinances, works, and engravings of the time. By judiciously employing and thoroughly critiquing these materials, an attempt was made to come as close as possible to regulatory accuracy. The depicted characters are not stiff and upright figures; each plate is also a small genre painting.
After Auguste de Moltzheim's passing, the painter Gramond completed the work by creating the 12 watercolors of the Mounted Artillery that were missing, using Moltzheim's research as a guide.
In March 1928, painter Pierre Bénigni continued to execute some watercolors to complete the series of mounted troops.
