CARABINIER GUARD TROOP HELMET, Imperial Guard, model 1858, Second Empire. 32152-1
Helmet in hammered brass in two pieces joined by a fastening. It is pierced at the top with two suction holes (Ø 2.5 cm). Height of the helmet 14.5 cm.
Brass visor, 5.5 cm wide. Its outer curve has a very obtuse prominent angle in the middle, bordered by a white metal circle, called maillechort, laid across, 7 mm wide on each folded face, and fixed at each end by a rivet. Interior lining in black waxed sheepskin.
Neck guard made of brass, similarly encircled like the visor, adorned with 3 maillechort nails on each side.
Strip made of tinplate, stamped all around with two raised lines (width 4 mm). Height on the sides 3.6 cm. It has a rounded tip in the middle measuring 10.3 cm which connects to the crest and is stopped by a half-spherical head iron screw. The two ends of the strip are riveted to the helmet, near the chinstraps.
In the middle of the strip, an embossed brass ornament is fixed with two tempered iron screws, with their heads facing inwards, representing a grenade surrounded by laurel leaves (height of this ornament 7.8 cm; maximum width 7.2 cm).
Chinstraps composed of a strong leather chinstrap covered with a decreasing series of interlaced brass 8-shaped rings. Length of the chinstrap 20 cm; length of the part covered with rings 14.5 cm. Width of the top link: 4.6 cm. Width of the bottom link: 2.2 cm. In the middle of each chinstrap, a flat brass hook is intended to hold the rings in place. The right chinstrap ends with a brass chain and hook, the left chinstrap with a simple hook.
Stamped iron rose-shaped ornament (diameter 5.5 cm) with a protruding outer molding and a radiant sun in the center. This rose is connected to the rings of the chinstrap by two brass rings and fixed to the helmet using a brass five-pointed star (diameter 2.6 cm) at the back of which a threaded rod passes through the helmet.
Crest consisting of two fins and a mask, in brass. Each fin has a curvilinear triangle, the base of which is connected to the helmet by a scalloped edge, 1.3 to 1.7 cm wide, adorned with small ridges. The fins are embossed with a decorative border of acanthus leaves and a laurel branch in the center and laurel branches. Each fin is attached to the helmet using two half-spherical head iron screws. Maximum height of the fins 13.2 cm.
The mask joins the two fins in the front, to which it is soldered by its edges adorned with lines. It ends squarely at the top and at the bottom by a lobe that fits under the strip and is penetrated by the same screw. (Width of the top of the mask 3.5 cm; in the middle 2.2 cm; at the bottom 4 cm). It is fixed at the bottom by the screw at the top of the strip.
In addition to being soldered to the mask, the two fins are connected to each other by a white iron partition.
Scarlet horsehair plume mounted on a steel wire. It protrudes from the crest by about 5 cm (from the 1858 regulation onwards, the mane will be cut to about 6 cm).
Inner lining made of black waxed sheepskin cut into ten "wolf teeth", each adorned with a metal eyelet.
