Handwritten text: "Mr. de Mariol, Lieutenant Colonel in the Regiment of La Tour d'Auvergne, is allowed to go for his personal affairs to Clermont Ferrand, department of Puy-de-Dome. According to the orders I received from the Minister of War, Mr. de Mariol must be back in Paris by the thirtieth of this month."

HISTORICAL CONTEXT:
The 1st Foreign Regiment is a regiment formed under the First Empire under the name of the Regiment of La Tour d'Auvergne. Mainly formed with Austrian, Russian, and Spanish prisoners of war, it served almost entirely under the Empire in the Italian peninsula from 1806 to 1814. One of its battalions also participated in the war in Spain. The corps was finally disbanded in 1815 after ten years of existence, during which it saw three colonels succeed each other: one of them, Godefroy de La Tour d'Auvergne, gave his name to the regiment.
