The Baron of the Empire of Saint-Martin, colonel of the 1st Line Infantry Regiment, writes to the Minister of War. This document is the accompanying letter to the nominal list of officers of the Regiment indicating the mutations that occurred among them during the month of January 1812, and informs that there are fifteen vacant positions for which he makes nomination proposals (nominal list missing).
Done at Toro on February 4, 1812.
Signed "the Baron of the Empire, Colonel of the 1st Line Regt".

In the margin of the text, a handwritten note "They have been provided for by decree of February 28, 1812" and "N. 131 / March 5".

Dimensions: 29 cm X 20.3 cm.
In good condition, with folding marks, remnants of a stamp with red ink residue "Seen .. 4 ...".

HISTORICAL BACKGROUND:
The 1st Infantry Regiment (1st RI) is an infantry unit of the French Army created during the Revolution from the Colonel-General Regiment, a French regiment from the Ancien Régime. It is the oldest fighting regiment in Europe still in active service and without interruption. Indeed, the 1st Infantry Regiment has existed under other regimes and denominations since 1479, when it was created under the name "Bandes de Picardie."

* Jean Étienne de Saint-Martin, born on January 22, 1762 in Cognac (Charente), died on August 21, 1828 in Cognac (Charente), is a French general of the Revolution and the Empire.
He enlisted on November 3, 1776, as a soldier in the Perche Regiment and participated in campaigns at sea from 1779 to 1781 aboard the ship "Le Héros." He was promoted to corporal on November 9, 1783, sergeant on February 1, 1786, and discharged on December 21, 1791.
On January 26, 1792, he reentered service as a second lieutenant in the 3rd battalion of volunteers from Finistère, and on July 15, 1792, he embarked from Paimbœuf to Saint-Domingue.

In 1805, he joined the island of Elba, and then participated in campaigns from 1806 to 1808 in Italy and the Kingdom of Naples. He was appointed colonel on April 30, 1807, of the 1st Line Infantry Regiment, and was wounded on April 16, 1809, by three saber strikes to the head, arm, and right hand, while throwing himself into the fray during the Battle of Sacile.
He was made a baron of the Empire on September 9, 1810, and in 1811, he joined the army of Spain.
