IMPERIAL GUARD CUIRASSIER HELMET, model 1854 modified 1872, Third Republic. 32263
HELMET with bowl, visor, and neck guard made of steel sheet with brass fittings. Bowl marked "490" scratched and then re-marked "1542" dated "56" (1856) with crown and "2C" for the second regiment of cuirassiers of the guard. Visor with neck guard with brass rim bent over their outer edge, visor lined with black waxed leather. Front band transformed in 1872 by removal of the crowned "N" replaced by a flaming bomb. Crest (H 10.5 cm) composed of two stamped fins with a series of ten decreasing caissons towards the back bordered at the top by laurel leaves; and a mask (width 4.1 cm) embossed with the head of Medusa at the top. Brass crest ornament trimmed with scarlet horsehair. Mane of black horsehair with a braided braid in the center, approximately 50 cm long. Chin strap with black leather chinstrap covered with interlocking rings stamped with laurel leaves (diameter 5.3 cm); each rosette is attached to the bowl by means of a brass screw. Brass plume holder with a round section, tapering downwards and molded with laurel leaves. Inner leather lining cut in wolf teeth.
