LETTER FROM GABRIEL GAUTIER, prisoner of war in Stapleton, England, ADDRESSED TO THE MAYOR OF MARSEILLE, on May 20, 1813. 18910-19
Gabriel Gautier has been without news from his family for over eight years. He is desperately seeking information about his parents and provides all the details he has for the mayor of Marseille to locate them.
The letter is addressed to "Monsieur / Le Maire de Marseille / Dépt des Bouches du Rhône à Marseille / France". There are postal markings over the address, indicating "not paid".
"Sir,
I am taking the liberty of writing to inquire about my family, as it has been over eight years since I received any news. I received a letter from my sister in La Corogne, Spain, dated December 7, 1804, in response to one I sent to them care of Mrs. Marie, widow Roubaud, a fashion merchant residing on Rue St. Fereol, opposite the Peros' house. Since then, I have not received any further news from them. The young ladies Josephine and Antoinette Morrin (this is their name) were tenants in 1802 at Madame Elizabet Pinatel's, nee Peticot, their sister-in-law, who at that time resided on the Maillot promenade in Monsieur Bonnefoi's house, a faience manufacturer on the second floor above his workshop.
If it is within your kindness to provide me with the address of Mr. Boucannier's son, and Mr. Honoré Boucannier who resided at the above-mentioned time on Rue Paradis towards the middle of the street, along with that of my sisters, it would greatly assist a miserable prisoner of war detained for eight years. Please excuse the trouble I am causing you, and I remain, sir, your very obedient servant.
Signed, Gabriel Gautier.
My address is with Mr. Gabriel Gautier, prisoner of war, taken on the privateer La Hydro, under number 5772, at Stapleton prison near Bristol, in Stapleton, England."
