BEAUTIFUL SET OF THREE LETTERS SIGNED BY JM BAZIN, SENT FROM ENGLAND TO HIS PARENTS IN SAINT MALO, January 8, 1808, May 30, 1808, August 28, 1812. 18910-17

The three letters were sent by Jean-Marie BAZIN from England to his parents, two addressed to Mrs. Bazin, one to Mr. Bazin, all in Saint-Malo, La Hulotais.

- Wincanton, January 8, 1808. Postal mark "CPL Cartel." Addressed to his mother:
"It's been over 5 long months since I've received any news from you, thankfully Chevalier received some in which you were mentioned, as I would be very worried. It is true that communication is difficult, we are being told that this one will go through a messenger. Our situation remains the same, each one tries to make the most of the time with as much patience as possible while longing for the return to our dear homeland. We are busy learning the English language which I assure you is quite difficult in its pronunciation. For the past 4 months, we have put together a play, performing once a week. I have done the decorations, which has kept me occupied. When possible, one must be useful to make time less difficult for companions in misfortune. Not a day goes by, dear Mother, that I do not think of you [...]
Signed: Bazin"
In a postscript, he gives updates on acquaintances who are also prisoners: "Thousand regards to our friends Le Turcs, and to all those who have kept the slightest memory of me," "Cardonnet sends his best regards to his wife," "Chevalier and his son are in good health."

Double leaf. 2 pages of writing. H 12 cm x 9 cm.
Fair condition, creases with small tears, tear with loss on the last page (without affecting the address).

- Wincanton, May 30, 1808. Postal mark "P.P.E&F. Single." Letter addressed to his mother.
"Imagine my worry, Dear Mother, for over eight months, I have not received any news from you, has something happened to you? [...]

In the first part, his thoughts wander to his memories at Maisonnette, his home, his countryside, his interest in nature and gardening, with lovely rural descriptions. Then he returns to the harsh reality and describes his environment.

"So far, I have not given you any description of the town I live in as it offers nothing interesting in itself, I did not think to make it the subject of a letter. As my stay becomes longer than I had imagined, you may be interested in having an idea of it, so I will try to give you a slight sketch.
There are around 300 French parole prisoners in Wincanton, a small rural town, the size of Hédée, built like it on a main road where stagecoaches pass, it is situated on the gentle slope of a hill at the foot of which is a very fertile plain with pastures [...]
The air is healthy, the heat is not bothersome, the sky being often cloudy [...]
We have very few interactions with the locals [...] A place where all you have to do is walk along boring roads, we have four different ones on which we have permission to cover a mile. I am quite well accommodated, my room is pleasant, from my windows I have a view as beautiful as possible [...]
As in the previous letter, he asks for news of the Le Turcs, states that Chevalier, Dében, etc., are doing well.
"All prisoners are receiving their pay, let me know if you are also receiving for me."

Double leaf. 3 pages of very compact writing. H 19.5 cm x 15.8 cm
Good condition, crease marks with small tears.

- Jedburgh, August 28, 1812. Long letter addressed to his father, "negt (merchant?) St Malo Dépt de Lile et Vilaine." Postal mark: "Postage to L. paid."
The prisoners are on the road back to their homeland, Jean-Marie Bazin anticipates the reunion with his family in elaborate descriptions.

"So our dear travelers are finally back in their homeland, what joy, dear father, after so many years of absence, to see you again in the midst of your family, surrounded by your friends, encircled by your children ah! the only hope that drives your Jean Marie is to embrace you once again and show you all the tenderness [...]

In a postscript at the end of the letter: "As I was about to send my letter, I receive one from you, quite old indeed, but no less interesting as in all of them I see continuous proofs of your friendship towards me. It is dated October 12, 1811, it was addressed to me in Wincanton it must have taken a long detour before coming to Scotland in Jedburgh in the Roxburghshire [...]

Double leaf. 3 pages of very compact writing. H 23 cm x 19 cm.
Fair condition, creases with small losses (creases on the address part).
