HISTORY:
The Dromedary Regiment is a French cavalry regiment, created by the Chief General Bonaparte on 20 Nivôse year VII (9 January 1799) during the Egyptian Campaign.
In 1801, the army was repatriated to France. By decree of the Consuls, the regiment was dissolved on 18 fructidor year IX (5 September 1801) and the personnel, totaling 283 men, were transferred to the gendarmerie and the Consuls' Guard.

- "At Cairo on 2 Brumaire 8th year" (24 October 1799). LETTER: Thévenin, the signatory, confirms the purchase of 46 camels from the 14th Dragoon Regiment and their transfer to the Dromedary Regiment upon the invitation of General Damas.
At the end of the document, the Chief of Brigade of the Dromedaries CAVALIER certifies receiving these 46 mounts from Thévenin on 3 Brumaire year 8.

* Jacques CAVALIER (1772-1846) was an officer of the French revolutionary army and later of the Grande Armée.
[...] Thus, on June 30, 1798, Cavalier lands in Egypt. On November 22, he is appointed as an adjutant battalion chief to the General Staff of the Egyptian army. On January 17, 1799, he becomes the commander of the Dromedary Regiment. On October 11, 1799, he is promoted to Chief of Brigade.
In March 1801, his dromedaries stand out by capturing an English redoubt as a diversion at the beginning of the Battle of Canope. The battle being lost, while Menou barricades himself in Alexandria and Béliard in Cairo, Cavalier moves around the Nile Delta and brings back supplies. Tasked with a resupply operation, he is encircled in May 1801 by the English and the Turks, and surrenders with the honors of war. [...]
