A very fine piece with a large vignette of the 85th Half-Brigade (described by Boppe & Bonnet on pp. 78 and 79, and reproduced in Le Carnet de la Sabretache, year 1898, pp. 742), signed by the members of the Administration Council and its president, the future General Viala, and viewed and countersigned by General Lagrange*.
The certificate is issued to Bazile FORT, a rifleman of this Half-Brigade "[...] The said citizen lost his left eye in the Army of the Orient following endemic ophthalmia in Egypt [...]".
Measures 46.5 cm x 30 cm.
In good condition, with folds and small tears on the edges (no missing parts).
* Count Joseph Lagrange, born on January 10, 1763 in Sempesserre near Lectoure in the Gers region and died on January 16, 1836 in Paris, was a French general of the Revolution and the Empire, and later a politician.
Appointed general by Bonaparte on the battlefield of Chebreiss in July 1798, employed in the Reynier division, serving in the suppression of the Cairo revolt and the Syrian Campaign; he would later become the chief of staff to Menou, general-in-chief of the Army, promoted to divisional general in September 1800.
