[...]
He entered service in 1786, and quickly advanced in the early years of the French Revolution. He served with distinction in all the campaigns of the Republic and accompanied General Junot to Portugal in 1807, where his valor was especially evident in 1811 in the Battle of Almeida. Pressured by the British to abandon this position, from which Masséna had unsuccessfully tried to drive them away, he blew up the fortifications and on May 10, 1811, at the head of the handful of brave men remaining with him, he fought his way through the British army to rejoin Masséna's army, which believed him to be lost. The rank of Division General was a reward for this distinguished action.
