BIOGRAPHY:
Alphonse Lalauze is the son of the engraver Adolphe Lalauze (1838-1906). He was a student of the painter Édouard Detaille and specialized in military subjects, later becoming a painter for the Army. Alphonse Lalauze participated in the exhibitions of the Salon des artistes français and became a member. He received an honorable mention in 1899 and a 3rd class medal in 1900. That same year, he also received an honorable mention at the Universal Exposition. He was appointed a Knight of the Legion of Honor by decree on August 7, 1931. The quality of his artwork led him to be chosen to illustrate several works, including "Histoire de l'Empereur raconté par un vieux soldat" by Honoré de Balzac, with original watercolors by Alphonse Lalauze engraved by his father Adolphe, and "Costumes militaires de l'armée française: 1902-1907" with text by Louis Delpérier. In 1923, Alphonse Lalauze won the competition organized by the Fédération gymnastique et sportive des patronages de France (FGSPF) for the poster of the international gymnastics competition held in Paris that same year. In 1927, this poster, reprinted without text, became the graphic design for all future competitions of this federation. Numerous and very visual, they contributed to his greater recognition by the general public. In 1935, the FGSPF commissioned him to create a diploma whose illustration, inspired by the poster, served as a frame for both sports awards and recognition of competence for sports officials.
