TRUMPET HELMET OF THE CARABINIERS OF THE IMPERIAL GUARD, model 1856 modified 1858, Second Empire. 4552

TRUMPET HELMET OF THE CARABINIERS OF THE IMPERIAL GUARD, model 1856 modified 1858, Second Empire. 4552

Yellow copper shell, hammered into shape in two shells joined by a clasp; pierced at the top with two suction holes (diameter 2.5 cm). Marked "DELACHAUSSÉE", numbered "644", previously numbered "456", dated "1856". Visor also in copper. Its outer curve, which has a very obtuse projecting angle in the middle, is bordered by a white metal circle called maillechort, placed crosswise, 7 mm wide on each turned edge, and fixed at each end by a rivet; it is doubled with black waxed leather glued at the bottom and caught in the edge of the circle. This visor is assembled to the shell by five copper rivets; its width in the middle is 5 cm; its exterior development is 30 cm; that of its throat, near the shell, is 26 cm; its center line is inclined at 40 degrees below a plane that would pass through the connection of the shell and the visor.

Neck guard in copper doubled with black basane leather, composed of two pieces: A circular band on its flat surface (apparent height, 18 mm), welded on the rear edge of the shell which it extends; it has a development of 23 cm near the shell and 20.5 cm at the bottom. The second piece, welded inside and at the bottom of the first, forms a lampshade shape (top development, 20.5 cm; same at the bottom, around 30 cm); the lower corners are rounded. The joining of the two pieces of the neck guard forms a 5 cm wide by 7 cm deep groove, measured on the centerline. The whole is bordered with maillechort like the visor, and this border has a development of 44.2 cm from the rear edge of one of the chinstrap rosettes to the opposite one. Black basane is glued below the neck guard. At 4 mm inside the border, on each side of the neck guard, there are three iron nails with half-spherical heads, 7 mm in diameter, riveted inside the helmet. The first is 7 mm above the first band; the second in the middle of this band, and the third on the lower piece, 22 mm from the second.

A tin band, stamped around its perimeter with three raised strips, 5 mm wide together, adheres to the shell; its base rests on the visor; height on the sides 3 cm. It has a rounded point in the middle, 10 cm high, which joins the crest and is stopped by an iron screw with a half-spherical head. The two ends of the band are riveted to the shell, near the chinstraps. In the middle of the band, an embossed copper ornament, representing a grenade surrounded by palm leaves, is attached with two tempered iron screws, the heads of which are on the inside.

Two mail chinstraps made of copper wire mesh. The links, 19 in total, are in the shape of a lying figure 8 and are attached by a 20th link in the shape of a B, to the rosette of the chinstrap. The bottom of the right chinstrap ends with a double copper wire hook 2.7 cm long. The left one is equipped with a chain of 11 copper rings (length of 9.5 cm) to receive the hook. At the end of this chain is a small clip to raise the chain when the chinstrap is not under the chin. The rosettes of the chinstraps are in tin, circular in shape (diameter 5.5 cm) bordered with relief edge and stamped with rays. They are attached to the helmet by a pivot, the head of which is a copper star (radius from the center to the tips 12 mm). This threaded rod is received in a small tube serving as a welded nut to the shell and which forms a pivot for the chinstrap and its rosette.

The chinstraps are mounted on a black varnished leather trim that extends under the rosette and has a flat clip in the middle to hold the chain. Length of each chinstrap, not including the rosette: 14 cm. Width of the 1st link: 4.5 cm. Width at the bottom: 1.7 cm.

Crest composed of two fins and a mask, in yellow copper. Each fin has a curvilinear triangle, the base of which connects to the shell with a scalloped edge, 1 to 1.5 cm wide, adorned with grooves. This connecting curve has a development of 23 cm. The upper curve has a development of about 35 cm from its base on the shell to the middle of the rounded peak of the crest. Finally, the inward curving curve, from the same point to the shell, has a development of 15 cm on 13 cm wide and 3.5 cm deep. The fins are embossed in relief with an acanthus leaf border and a laurel branch in the middle.

The mask connects the two fins in the front to which it is soldered by its edges adorned with fillets. It ends squarely at the top and at the bottom with a lamp shape that fits under the band and through the same screw. Apart from the soldering with the mask, the two fins are joined to each other by a tin partition, soldered from one to the other at half of their height and on a curved development of about 13 cm and also by an inner covering also in tin soldered inside the edges.

The crest is assembled on the shell by the screw that crosses the band and the mask, as well as four similar iron screws (two per fin) placed in the edge of each fin at its two ends and received inside the shell in curved iron nuts.

White horsehair chain mounted on a steel wire. It increases in size from the neck guard where it has about 5 cm circumference to its head which has about 11 cm, and which extends about 4 cm beyond the crest. The wire forms a hook under the head of the chain and towards the middle a ring by which the chain is attached, as well as by a threaded rod passing through the shell below the crest from behind, in a hole made for this purpose. A curved nut inside the helmet receives this screw.

Interior padding consisting of a turban and a liner. The turban is a single piece of cowhide. It is attached to the helmet by four iron screws, two in the front. These are the same screws that secure the band ornament. Their flattened half-spherical heads are on the turban that these screws pass through as well as the shell to screw into the ornament. The other two screws have their flat heads located outside the helmet, slightly higher than the chinstrap rivets; they pass through the shell and the turban and are stopped on the latter by a small copper nut fit into it. The liner is in strong shiny black basane leather, cut with ten wolf's teeth. Total height of the helmet: 37 cm.
