[...] Revolutionary Wars:
Volunteering on 2 October 1789, he was appointed captain at 23 years old, in the 3rd battalion of volunteers from Haute-Garonne, and later as a soldier in the year II (1793). In 1793, Dugommier appointed him as commander of an elite battalion under the immediate orders of a certain Chief Brigade Lannes, who would later become Marshal and Duke of Montebello.
In the armies of the Alps, Italy, and Eastern Pyrenees, he distinguished himself in the campaigns of Italy and Spain. In 1798, he became Chief of Staff of the Army of Italy. Leading a corps of 16,000 men, he unblocked Coni, captured Fossano and Savigliano, defeated the Austrians at the Settepani mountain pass, and took the San Giacomo redoubt before being shot. He also displayed great valor at Murazzo and in the Battle of Montebello. The army had to retreat behind the Var River.
The Marengo campaign provided Compans with new opportunities to distinguish himself. Following the Peace of Lunéville, he was given command of the province of Coni. While hunting down the bandits known as "barbets," he fell into their hands, but they released him in gratitude for the humanity he had shown in the region during the war. Knight of the Legion of Honor and later Commander of the same order, he was promoted to Brigade General and transferred to the Grande Armée as Chief of Staff of the IV Corps. [...]
