* HISTORY: Sophie Blanchard, born Marie Madeleine Sophie Armant on March 24, 1778 in Trois-Canons, commune of Yves, and died in Paris on July 6, 1819, widow of the famous aeronaut Jean-Pierre Blanchard, was the first professional female aeronaut, with 67 successful ascensions, as well as the first woman to perish in an aerial accident when the balloon she was in caught fire in the air in Paris, above the gardens of Tivoli. She became a favorite of Napoleon Bonaparte, who appointed her as his "Minister of Balloons" - an honorary title previously held by André-Jacques Garnerin, who fell out of favor in 1804. She is said to have considered plans for leading a balloon invasion of Europe.
On June 24, 1810, she made an ascent on the Champ-de-Mars in Paris at the request of Napoleon Bonaparte, to accompany the Imperial Guard in celebrating his marriage to Marie-Louise of Austria. She also made a flight for the "Emperor's Feast" in Milan on August 15, 1811. When Napoleon's son was born, she flew over Paris and scattered birth announcements over the city.
