The leave is handwritten, on letterhead "GRENADIERS Near the National Representation," with the handwritten addition "now the Consuls' Guard" and the mention "Approved by me, Division General, inspecting commander of the Guard, signed: J. Murat."

"We, the undersigned Members forming the Administration Council of the said Corps, certify to all whom it may concern that we have granted leave to Citizen Laurent LINK, drum major, born on the ninth of March, seventeen hundred forty-two in (?) Department of Bas-Rhin, height of 1 meter 899 millimeters, gray white hair and eyebrows, open forehead, gray eyes, long nose, average mouth, long chin, oval and full face.
He served in said Corps since the twelfth Thermidor, year three, with honor, probity, and civic-mindedness, until the day this present leave was granted to him to enter Les Invalides, as a lieutenant, according to the decision of the inspecting general, confirmed by the Minister of War.
Done in Paris on the fifth pluviôse year eight of the French Republic, one and indivisible."

HISTORICAL BACKGROUND:
Consuls' Guard: It was organized by order of the Consuls on January 3, 1800, under the command of Division General Murat. It consisted of a company of infantry chasseurs and two battalions of grenadiers with six companies each.
It was formed from troops of the Directorate's Guard, the Legislative Corps, and the guides' company. Recruitment was to be among soldiers from all armies who had participated in several campaigns. Murat was appointed to lead the consular guard, with Bessières as second in command.
