PARIS GUARD HELMET, model of October 30, 1860, Second Empire. 27753-1
Helmet entirely made of steel. It consists of a skull, a visor, a neck guard both edged with a brass wire folded over the outer border, a headband, two chin straps, a crest, a black horsehair mane approximately 52 cm long, and a plume holder. All fittings are in brass. The skull is stamped in two parts welded together, pierced inside with 3 suction holes for ventilation. Visor lined with black waxed leather as well as the neck guard. Front brass headband embossed with a radiant sun in the center with an uncrowned imperial eagle holding a sparkling thunderbolt in its talons. At the bottom of the headband, a banner reads "GARDE DE PARIS". Rear brass headband without decoration but framed by a relief fillet molding.
Crest composed of two fins embossed with a decreasing sequence of eight oval-shaped drops, each separated by the same motif but smaller, with foliage corollas and laurel leaves at the rear; from the rear of the fin, a water leaf rises, releasing a twisted molding at the top. Each fin is attached to the skull with four steel screws; the mask is embossed with an upward-facing laurel branch and fastened at the bottom with a steel screw. Steel covering plate without decoration. Crest ornament consists of a brass olive embossed with foliage, a brass socket embossed with laurel leaves, and a scarlet tassel. The chin straps are made up of two strong cowhide leather chin pieces covered in black waxed leather and each covered with an interlocking figure-eight chain. They are attached to the skull with a steel screw and a round brass rosette embossed with a radiant sun. Brass tubular plume holder with a slightly decreasing square section towards the bottom. Inner leather liner cut into nine teeth.
