BIOGRAPHY:
Although a brilliant and prolific painter, the life of this student of Jean-Léon GÉRÔME at the School of Fine Arts cannot be found in any of the classic biographical dictionaries of 19th-century painters. Some research, however, has allowed us to outline his career.
Emmanuel Grammont was born on October 10, 1862 in Arc-en-Senans, in the Doubs region, where his father Auguste was then working as a municipal collector. His mother, Adèle Frédérique TUEFFERD, managed the household where a second son, Maurice, was born a few years later, and who went on to become a professor of literature (teaching at the University of Montpellier).
Drawn to drawing from a young age, his father allowed him to continue his studies at the School of Fine Arts in Paris, where his talent gained him admission to the studio of the renowned Jean-Léon GÉRÔME. However, on November 27, 1883, he was called up for military service. He was assigned to the 7th Dragoon Regiment and stationed in Vitry-le-François. In 1887, his excellent service record allowed him to join the Reserve. On October 15, 1898, he was promoted to the rank of brigadier.
After being discharged from the military, he returned to his studio on Rue Bonaparte. That same year, he exhibited for the first time at the Artists' Salon a painting titled "Soon Ready" under number 1086. His love for the army and cavalry, as well as his time in the Dragoons, fueled his appetite for military and equestrian painting. He joined the Carnets de la Sabretache, where he produced some drawings and contributed to organizing exhibitions. He exhibited at the Tunisian Salons (earning an honorable mention in 1896), as well as at international Black and White exhibitions (salons exclusively dedicated to the art of drawing). From 1888 to 1894, he regularly presented military-themed paintings at the French Artists' Salons. He quickly became a full member of the society.
He disappeared from the salon catalog after 1894.
On October 1, 1908, our painter was released from the Reserve. When his son, Louis Philippe, was born on October 20, 1908, the family, who then lived on Rue Alphonse Daudet in the 14th arrondissement, declared him as an artist painter at the town hall. A member of the development committee of the Historical Museum of the Army, he continued his painting career.
