Frédéric CHOUARD, soldier in the 44th Marine Battalion, 3rd Company of the Spanish Army. He writes two letters to his wife living in SAHUT *. The third letter is from the Ministry of Marine announcing his death after being wounded.

1 - From St Sebastien on March 30, 1810. Autograph letter from Frédéric CHOUARD to his wife "Madame Martin in Rouen, rue St Eloit n°9 to be given to Marie Quételle in Saut * / in Rouen". Military postal mark "N° 1? FRENCH ARMY IN SPAIN".
"...We are stopped in St Sebastien in Spain which is not my nation, until now we are serving the port and the city and the coasts there. The guard comes to us day by day and when we finish our guard duty to rest, we lay down on very bad straw worse than animals [...]" Double page. 3 pages. H 21.3 cm x 15.5 cm. Poor condition, foxing, folds, marginal tears.

2 - From St Sebastien on May 7, 1810. Autograph letter from Frédéric CHOUARD to his wife, the address is still that of Madame Martin (see letter 1.) but to be given to "Marie Chouard in Sahut * Department of Seine Inférieure / in Rouen". Military postal mark "SPAIN VIA BAYONNE".
After giving news about his health, he mentions needing money:
"I would tell you that we leave on May 9 from St Sebastien to go to Saragossa in Spain. I leave this place content but what saddens me is to take the road without money in such a hot country where one is often thirsty and as I am without money, we are forced to drink from the river which puts fear in our hearts [...]" Double page. 3 pages. H 21.3 cm x 15 cm. Poor condition, foxing, folds, marginal tears and tears at the folds (two of which are taped with Scotch tape, ink stains).

3 - Paris, June 12, 1811. This letter is signed by the Chief of the 1st Division of the Ministry of Marine and announces that Frédéric CHOUARD has passed away.
It is addressed to "Mr. HUE deputy to the Mayor of the Commune of SAHURE district of Rouen Seine Inférieure / in Rouen".
Header "1st Division - Reviews". Remaining stamp in black ink "MINISTRY OF MARINE 1st DIVISION".
"[...] incorporated in the 3rd Company of the 2nd Flotilla Crew in the Army of Portugal, was wounded in the combat of Almazan on July 10, 1810 by a bullet that went through his chest. He was taken to the hospital in Soria on the 12th of the same month and he passed away there [...]" Double page. 1 page. H 23.2 cm x 18.2 cm. Poor condition, foxing, folds, tears with missing pieces (outside of the text).
