SIGNED AUTOGRAPH LETTER BY B. BERNARD, midshipman aboard a brick in May 1814, TO HIS FATHER, May 23, 1814 Cherbourg Roadstead. 18856-31

This interesting letter from a midshipman aboard a brick in May 1814 recounts the return to French ports of the vessels previously stationed in Holland (Flushing). It is dated "Cherbourg Roadstead, May 23, 1814.

"My dear father,
So we have left Flushing and it is from a port of France that I am writing to you. On Friday the 20th at 8 o'clock, the French vessels received orders to prepare to set sail the next day. We immediately cast off and set sail the next morning at 5 o'clock with a very favorable wind. At noon, we passed by Dunkirk, but six leagues offshore, so that I only had the pleasure of seeing the tower of my native land in the mist. The brick continued its route in sight of land until we rounded Gris Nez Point in the evening, which we took as our starting point. At 9 o'clock, the wind began to freshen and continued to increase, so we reduced sail and took in all reefs in our (?) We continued with this sail set up until daylight, not really knowing where we were, but the storm not having diverted us from our course, we sighted land around 7 o'clock in the morning. Not knowing exactly what land we had in sight and with fog rising, we set course northward, moving away from land; fortunately, at six o'clock in the evening, we sighted two French frigates also coming from Flushing and sailing downwind. As they had the same destination as us, we matched their course and arrived yesterday at sunset in the roadstead of Cherbourg [...]
... There are also many English vessels carrying prisoners arriving daily [...]
... all second-class midshipmen have received their discharge, with permission to go wherever they pleased, without receiving any pay or even a settlement of what was owed to them... "
