AUTOGRAPH LETTER FROM GRENADIER VACHER, 116th Regiment, 3rd Battalion in Barcelona, Spain, TO HIS PARENTS, farmers in Dordogne, on November 1, 1813. 18856-29
Addressed to "Mr. François Vacher Farmer / at the village of La Rivarie Commune of St Pai d'Ecole (St Pierre d'Ecole) Canton of Thiviers Department of La Dordogne poste restante at Thiviers / At La Rivarie".
Postal stamp "BAU PRINCIPAL ARMY OF SPAIN".
The grenadier expresses surprise at not receiving a response to his previous letter, complains about his difficult conditions, and requests, if possible, to receive some money. He describes an attack that took place on September 16.
"St Sillon, November 1, 1813.
After letting two months go by without receiving any news in response to the letter I wrote to you while in Saint Vinssant, it must be that my letter did not reach you because I believe you would not have failed to reply promptly, hoping that this one will have better luck than the last, so as soon as you receive this, please let me know your news [...]
I must tell you that since we left Pau for Spain, we have not been well because you know when a soldier is forced to live on his very poor ration and have no money, he looks quite miserable, especially in this cursed Spain, so I beg you to send me some money if it is possible.
I will tell you that on the sixteenth of September, we had an encounter with around four thousand prisoners, we only lost about a hundred men killed and wounded. If it had been daytime, we would have taken them all prisoner, even though they had the best positions one could have, we made them retreat about seven or eight leagues without stopping.
Nothing else to report for now [...]
Signed: M. Vacher".
At the end of the letter, he notes his address: "Mister Vacher grenadier of the 116th Regiment, Third Battalion in Barcelona in Spain in Catalonia".
Double sheet. 2 pages.
H 29.4 cm x 20.4 cm.
