Jean LABRES, a native of Grenoble, has been in the service of the navy for about thirteen years. He is requesting a certificate of his services in the navy from the General Commissioner of the Navy in Toulon.
Margin annotation on the letter states: "Replied on 5 December."
Dated letter: Grenoble, September 10, 1815. With address "Monsieur le Commissaire Général de la Marine à Toulon / Départ. du Var." Postmark "P37P GRENOBLE." Remaining red wax seal.

"Sir Commissioner General,
I have the honor to inform you that at the time of the navy's decommissioning by order of the King, I served twice on Le Commerce de Paris* and L'Incorruptible; as a 3rd class sailor that, upon Napoleon's return and the recall of the navy, I became an isolated soldier, I re-entered service in the 3rd regiment of the engineering corps, then again discharged and currently residing at No. 78, Rue St François in this city, by order of the Deputy Marshal, Baron de Villiers, who instructs me to obtain a certificate of my services in the navy.
Therefore, Mr. Commissioner General, I have the honor to implore you to be so kind as to send me one.

"Jean Labres On L'Incorruptible, "Na ?" 1st Friday in 14th year from June 15, 1807 to January 1, 1808 and from January 1, 1808 to May 11, 1814.
On the ULM (..? 279) from May 11 to August 15.

Double-sided sheet, 1 page. H 25 cm x 19.5 cm.
In fair condition, marginal tears with some losses (text unaffected), folds.

* Designed by Jacques-Noël Sané, the COMMERCE DE PARIS was a three-deck, 110-gun ship of the French Navy, the lead ship of her class, whose construction began in December 1804 and was launched in August 1806.
** The ULM was a 74-gun ship of the Téméraire class in service in the French navy during the first Empire.
Between July 7 and August 8, 1814, the Ulm repatriated French troops from Corfu to Ajaccio via Toulon, and transported troops from Ajaccio to Toulon.
