Steel metal parts with white polish.
Walnut stock in one piece, straight stock without protrusion known as "English style," marked "A 4777" and with its acceptance stamp.
Barrel with pentagonal shape at the breech then cylindrical, barrel length 72 cm without the bolt block, 88.5 cm with the bolt block, 95 cm with the bolt handle, 11 mm caliber. Mounted on the stock using a capucine, a sling swivel, and a nose cap, the magazine, a specific feature of the weapon, is positioned under the barrel, with cartridges being loaded with the bolt open, the rocking magazine ensuring the presentation of ammunition, triangular front sight with adjustable rear sight, firing range up to 1200 m, a second sliding rear sight allowing firing up to 1800 m. Barrel marked on the upper side "2nd CLASS," right side marked "Str 1879"; it is stamped with "J" in a circle, "P" in an oval, "D" in an oval, "W" in a circle.
Numerous fittings stamped with "M," "S," "D," "P" in a circle, "K," are likely French inspection stamps, as French officers were attached to the Austrian manufacturing facility.
All parts of the weapon bear the same serial number "A 44777."

Bolt housing with the name of the Austrian manufacturer "MANUFACTURE DE Mr DE WERNDL - Steyr-Austria," and model "Mle 1878 MARINE."
Total length of the weapon 123 cm.

Gras marine bayonet: steel hilt with downward curved quillon marked "20550" and stamped with a marine anchor (for bayonets allocated to the navy), brass pommel, wooden grip scales and steel spring. Hollow-ground blade, length 52.2 cm, flat spine signed "Mre de Steyr mle de Werndl 1881." Steel scabbard with frog stud, wristband marked "17166."

HISTORICAL BACKGROUND:
Replacing the Chassepot rifle model 1866, adopted in June 1878, the army equipped La Royale with its first repeating rifle in history.
