CUIRASSIER HELMET, model 1872 modified 1874, Third Republic. 27767
One-piece steel helmet, stamped with three vent holes (diameter 1.5 cm) at the top, marked with size "59" and maker "B. FRANCK & SES FILS. AUBERVILLIERS". Steel visor edged with a 7 mm wide brass rim placed on the outer edge. Neck guard identical to the visor. Stamped brass headband featuring a flaming grenade surrounded by laurel leaves in relief.
Each chin strap consists of 15 copper scales alternately cut into three or two festoons, decreasing in width from the top scale, which is 3.5 cm, to the last one, which is only 2 cm wide.
The right chin strap is finished with a small copper plate riveted at the end, with a copper buckle attached. At the end of the left strap, there is a similar plate with a copper D attached, featuring a black varnished leather chin guard.
The top scale of each chin strap is covered with a movable copper rosette, independent from the strap. It is circular (diameter 4.2 cm) with four relief brass bands. The rosette is attached to the helmet with a hinge.
Brass crest composed of two winglets, a mask, and a covering.
Winglets adorned with palmettes and a border along the top edge. The lower part has a scalloped rim decorated with water leaves, fixed to the helmet with two screws.
A tin plate joins the upper edges of the winglets to maintain the separation.
The mask is stamped with a relief Medusa head. The covering, also stamped, shows the continuation of the Medusa head’s hair with intertwined snakes (length 9 cm).
Crest ornament composed of a stamped base with relief water leaves and a lens made of two stamped shells. Attached to the front of the crest, supporting a scarlet horsehair plume, H 6 cm.
Black horsehair mane, approximately 60 cm long.
Brass plumet holder, tubular in shape with a slightly decreasing square section towards the base, H 3.2 cm.
Interior lining consisting of a turban and a black glossy sheepskin coif with seven loup de loup teeth and brass eyelets.
