In green Morocco leather, with gold bordered embossing "à la roulette", marked in gold on its cover "J.B. HUBET / OFFICIER / DU GÉNIE MARITIME". Silver metal lock and hinges. Interior lining in green Morocco leather with gold borders, one of the interior pockets in blue canvas is lined with a map of the Pertuis roadstead in Brittany. Dimensions: H 35 cm x 43.5 cm, thickness 6 cm.

BIOGRAPHY:
Jean-Baptiste Hubert, born on May 1, 1781 in Chauny - Aisne, to Jean Baptiste Hubert, lock keeper, canal collector, and Marie Catherine Guette, passed away on September 22, 1845 in Rochefort, was a naval architect and engineer of the Navy.
Educated at École Polytechnique, where he entered on December 20, 1797 at 16 and a half years old, he was sent to Brest in 1799 where he stayed until 1804, he arrived at the Rochefort arsenal in 1805 as a first class assistant engineer until 1812. He was detached to Bordeaux from 1812 to 1814 and then returned to Rochefort where he ended his maritime engineering career as director of naval constructions.
His contributions were numerous. He designed various machines useful for the manufacture of ropes for the Royal Rope Factory of Rochefort, machines for making gournables, specialized windmills, and around fifteen ships. He was also responsible for the modernization of the Rochefort arsenal.
He was made a knight of the Royal Order of the Legion of Honor in July 1814, an officer in April 1833, and a commander in June 1842. He was also made a knight of Saint-Louis in 1824. He was a member of the general council of Charente-Inférieure. He was elected corresponding member of the Academy of Sciences, mechanical section, on November 30, 1818.
He married Marie Jeanne Pain, born on August 18, 1781, on May 25, 1819 in Voutron, a former disappeared commune.
