IMPERIAL GUARD DRAGOONS HELMET, 1856 MODEL, KNOWN AS "EMPRESS'S DRAGOONS", Second Empire. 27731

Brass helmet, with a serial number stamped at the back "471", dated "56" (1856), marked with the "DELACHAUSSÉE" maker's mark, and the regimental marking of the Imperial Guard Dragoons "D" followed by an imperial crown. Visor and neck guard in brass, edged with a 8 mm wide brass strip folded over the outer edges. The visor measures 4.8 cm wide, lined with black waxed leather. The neck guard is also lined with black waxed leather and stamped on the inside with an "L". Depth of the helmet is approximately 15 cm.

Front brass band embossed with a crowned "N" on two laurel branches, with a central height of 10.5 cm. Square-section plume holder tapering downwards, with a height of 4 cm. Crest composed of two crests embossed with a series of 6 decreasing panels towards the back with horizontally grooved backgrounds, each separated by a ridge. The lower edge of the crests is folded over the helmet, cut into festoons, and attached by four brass half-spherical head screws. Maximum height of the crest is 10.5 cm.

Mask with horizontally grooved background, adorned with five smooth raised moldings including a relief-stamped head of a gorgon at the top and a palmette at the bottom. Mask width at the top is 4.5 cm, 2.5 cm at the center, and 3.5 cm at the bottom. Mask base attached with a brass screw. Brass ornament of the crest adorned with black horsehair, with a height of 5.5 cm for the olive and crest ferrule, and 6.5 cm for the hair. Black horsehair mane with a braided center plait, approximately 63 cm long.

Chinstraps composed of sturdy leather chinstraps covered with intertwined brass rings, with a maximum width of 3.4 cm and a minimum width of 1.9 cm. One chinstrap terminates in a square brass buckle and the other in a strap. The chinstraps are fastened to the helmet with a brass half-spherical headed screw with round rosettes embossed with laurel leaves.

Interior lining of black waxed leather with 7 leather tabs. Total height 35 cm.
