TRUMPET HELMET OF THE REPUBLICAN GUARD ON HORSEBACK, model 1876, type 1927-1933, Third Republic. 27821
Helmet entirely in chrome steel. It consists of a shell (H 11.5 cm), a visor (width 5.8 cm) and a neck guard, both encircled with a brass rim folded over the outer edge, a headband, two chin straps, a crest, a scarlet hair mane about 70 cm long, and a plume holder (H 3.5 cm). All fittings are in brass. The shell is a single stamped piece. It is pierced inside with 3 suction holes for ventilation. The interior of the visor is painted green and the neck guard is painted black.
Front headband (H 7.5 cm) in embossed brass depicting two laurel branches tied together by a ribbon from which the Legion of Honor and the Croix de Guerre of 1914 are hanging, allowing to attribute this type of helmet 1876 to the period 1927-1933; in the center, above the branches, the coat of arms of the City of Paris is represented. Crest composed of two fins embossed with a decreasing series of 13 gadroons surrounded by a beaded ribbon and separated by acanthus leaf and a fleuron. Each fin is attached to the shell by two brass screws; the mask is embossed with 4 horizontally striped ribbons separated by 3 smooth ribbons, at the bottom a palmette is embossed in relief and at the top a medusa head, also in relief. Height of the fins 8.5 cm, height of the mask 11.3 cm; the top of the crest is partially covered in the front by a cover plate representing the hair of the medusa head in relief. Ornament of the crest composed of a brass olive embossed with foliage (diameter 4.9 cm, thickness 2.6 cm), a brass socket embossed with laurel leaves (diameter 1.9 cm, thickness 2.6 cm) and a scarlet hair plume (H 6.5 cm). This ornament is attached to the crest by a threaded brass rod.
The chin straps are made up of two chin straps in strong cowhide leather covered with black waxed Morocco leather and each covered with fifteen brass scales staggered by two or three festoons and fastened to the leather, the wider scale is 3.6 cm, the narrower 2.1 cm. At the lower end, the last scale is rounded, and at the outer end the scale has two embossed festoons in one piece with a round rosette (diameter 4.4 cm). The chin straps are attached to the shell by a lock and are connected to each other by a black varnished leather strap with brass buckles. Tubular plume holder in brass with a slightly tapered square section downwards. Inner leather liner cut into 6 dents with white metal eyelets.
