The beginning of the letter is dedicated to inquiries about the health of his parents and his own.
"... I would tell you that we only stayed one day in Besançon and we were sent to Fort de Joug. They left us one league behind a village named PONTARLIER and quartered us in parishes about a league around, and we are there without any communication, doing a bit of exercise commanded by those who have already served, we were sent bread from the village [...]. we are equipped with no other military gear than a rifle, only without ammunition [...] we are all from the area except for our Captain and our Sub-Lieutenant who are from the Nantua area [...]
