The letter is addressed to "Mr. / Mr. Renaudeau de Rant(?) a prahecq * arondissement of Niort department of Deux-Sèvres in Poitou poste restant in Niort", the first part is intended for his father and the last page for his comrade Renaudeau.
Postal mark "B.on SÉDENTAIRE GRANDE ARMÉE".

Pierre Valentin hopes his family is in good health. He himself was sick, with measles, and was hospitalized on April 16, he was discharged from the hospital cured on May 1. "... You should know that people are dying every day and I was afraid of dying myself... ". "... In Mayence, bread costs 4 sous and ten centimes and wine costs 9 sous per bottle...." "... I am curious to know if many young men from our town have been conscripted since I left. We will cross the Rhine on the first day to rejoin our regiment, and when we have crossed the Rhine, we will live among the townsfolk. Nothing else to report to you... ".

In the second part of the letter, Pierre Valentin addresses his comrade Renaudeau, inquiring about his health. "I hope your health is as good as mine, my dear comrade, forgive me for not having written to you, my dear comrade, you told me you would mention something about your marriage, it would please me if you did so to my comrades who are in the vicinity of Mayence. I will tell you that I see "Russians" in Mayence....".

* The regiment of flanker-grenadiers of the Imperial Guard is a French military unit of the Imperial Guard, attached to the Young Guard. Created in 1813, the regiment consists of men with a family member who is a forest ranger.

* Prahecq is a commune in central-western France located in the Deux-Sèvres department.
