"Mainz, July 15, 1813.
Mr. Jean Louis Begot,
I am writing to thank you for your letter as well as those of your mother and your siblings... I am doing well, and I hope this letter finds you the same. I must inform you that I arrived in Mainz on July 14. We left Cherbourg on June 3, and I have always been in good health, thank God. I will tell you that we will only be staying in Mainz for two days. We are heading to Berlin in Prussia to rejoin our regiment.
Regarding the money, I have not run out yet, but I do not like my buttons. They paid us 9 sous a day on the road; I am still with the son Bellemois, the son Rivière de Sabatte, Victor, and the son Jardien de St Marc. I will tell you that when we passed through Germany, we were not doing too well; we couldn't make ourselves understood.
