The soldier tells his mother about the battles and difficulties of military life without money because his bag was stolen. He solicits her and begs her not to abandon him.
"My dear mother,
I will tell you that we have already seen the effects of war. Unhappy Cossack troops approached Fontainebleau and rushed at us so that we spent 13 days bivouacking in the cold. Not being strong enough to survive, we had to flee and retreat 27 places. We took refuge in Courbevoie. Within three days, troops from Spain arrived and destroyed these brigands, so we arrived at Fontainebleau on the 18th. We thought we would be safe...
We are not many in Fontainebleau, out of the 700 men we were, 419 were killed or wounded. I have not been injured, but the strap of my bag was cut off, so, my dear mother, I ask you to send me some money to help me a little.
My dear mother, I know that you are very stretched, but despite your great difficulty, do not abandon me. You know that I received 20 francs from my uncle (..??) after paying for the things I bought, I didn't have a sou left. [...]
Signed: Son PIN."
"Please respond as quickly as possible. If you send me what I ask for, have someone trustworthy post it, so that I receive the money [...]."
