"Bonn, November 30, 1813.
My Dearest Mother, I will tell you that we crossed the Rhine very successfully, about three of... I assure you that after being pursued by the enemy armies as we were, I never thought I would have the pleasure of seeing you again. We reunited with our regiment in Coblentz, they were part of the unfortunate retreat of the Grand Army. There were 4000 men, only a hundred remained. Like us in the detachment, we were 260, now we are only 100 because due to the fatigue we had, almost all of us fell sick. We crossed the Grand Duchy of Frankfurt, Westphalia, and the Grand Duchy of Berg, crossed the Rhine again at Düsseldorf...where the Prussians and Swedes reentered two days later..."
