Jean Delavarde hopes that his parents and brothers and sisters are in good health, he informs them that he is in good health, and he sends his regards to his uncles Jean-Pierre and Pierre Le Marechal. He provides some details of his daily life:
"My dear father, I will tell you that we crossed the Rhine on March 17. We are four leagues from Mainz, staying with a bourgeois who provides us with food. We do not receive any advance payment, what pains me the most is not having any tobacco...
My address is in Frankfurt, part of the 3rd regiment, first battalion, fourth company."
