"Oberth ... (?) July 6, 1813.
... You believe, as it seems to me, that I lost my greatcoat, but I have not had that misfortune. We were lucky to only have been scared for about a week, luckier than other regiments who have lost even the regiment's funds [...] I have just joined the skirmishers [...] there are many decorations in our battalion, almost all the captains have received them. The Commander has been appointed an officer of the Legion. There is a lot of talk here about an extension of the armistice and even a general peace [...] as a good Frenchman, I desire peace and as a healthy soldier, I would see the war continue with quite some pleasure. Our soldiers are getting prepared and learning the maneuvers wonderfully [...] We still have about fifteen days left, more than enough to bring a great part of them to the most satisfactory state. Thanks to God, I have not received any injuries neither at Lützen *, nor at Wurschen **, we did not have any officers wounded in this last engagement, and the two who were wounded returned a long time ago. We are still in the same quarter where we drink water abundantly and sleep on straw as if on a good bed. It is a bit cold here and one might think it is more towards the end of autumn than in the middle of summer.
Double leaf. H 19 cm x 12 cm.
3 1/2 pages of fine handwriting.
Good condition, folds, stains at the level of the remaining red wax seal, frayed edges, small tears with missing parts.
* The Battle of Lützen, also called by German historians the Battle of Großgörschen, took place on May 2, 1813, during the return of the Napoleonic army after the disaster of the Russian campaign. Wittgenstein attacked an advanced column of Napoleon near Lützen, in order to retake the town of Leipzig. After a day of intense fighting, the Prussian and Russian forces retreated. The absence of cavalry prevented the French from pursuing them.
** The Battle of Bautzen (called the Battle of Wurschen on the Arc de Triomphe) is a French victory of Napoleon I's troops won on May 20 and 21, 1813, against the Russo-Prussian forces commanded by the Russian general Wittgenstein. Despite the vastly superior numbers of the French army and the poor decisions of the opponent, Napoleon could only achieve an incomplete victory, although he had the opportunity for a decisive victory, mainly due to Marshal Ney. It took place within the context of the War of the Sixth Coalition.
