Waterloo and the Return of King Louis XVIII. SIGNED AUTOGRAPH LETTER BY JEAN JACQUES PAIN, sergeant in the 1st company of the 1st Battalion of the National Guard in Bayeux, to his brother Joseph residing in Caen, July 8, 1815. 18856-5

Letter with address "To Mr. / Mr. Joseph Pain / care of Mr. Le Paumier Grocer Merchant residing at venel street with the horses / Department of Calvados / In Caen". Postmark "76 ABBEVILLE".

"Abbeville, July 8, 1815.
My dear brother and friend,
I had written to you on June 20th ... in which I informed you of the outcome of the events of the 15th, 16th, 17th, and 18th of last month, which detailed the losses suffered by our army. These four days of combat and other events, of which I do not provide the details, were painful, and I did not date and sign it for you [...] I hope to have the pleasure of seeing you again soon, as we will know our destination shortly. The King arrived in Paris on July 7th and was escorted by French troops; the allied troops are on duty at the city gates and main locations. Only the National Guards of Paris are maintained by the King to help maintain order in the city. We had a review yesterday by the War Commissary. There were only the five battalions of the National Guard of Calvados present, among which was the Caen Battalion. This Battalion had brought its flag. The General Commanding the place, upon seeing it, noticed that there were arms on the flag, and ordered a painter to obscure them and replace them with Grenades. But the Non-commissioned officers and even some officers opposed this. They swore that if the arms were removed and replaced with Grenades, they would leave, as when they enlisted, it was for the Emperor and not for the King [...]
Here is my address. To Mr. Jean Jacques Pain, Sergeant in the 1st Company of the 1st Battalion of the National Guard of Bayeux, barracks of the Gardien, Rue de la Grande Pointe, Abbeville, Department of Somme, in Abbeville".
