Addressed to "Monsieur / Monsieur René de Thomé, rue des Francs Bourgeois No. 19 Paris." Round red ink postal stamp "January 2, 1813" and "ORLEANS."
Orléans, January 1, 1813.
Here is my dear René, a copy of the letter that I have just received.
The above letter signed "Eugène" was addressed to OBERLIN from Koenigsberg on December 18, 1812.
"My dear friends, I have arrived safely in Koenigsberg, and it is with my own hand that I can inform you of this. I have suffered greatly, I have lost servants, coachmen, horses, belongings, everything, in short, except for myself whom I bring back to you at a gallop. I am leaving shortly for Danzig, where I will catch the mail to Mayence and thank God! What happiness to see you all again after all this. I am full of plans to write, this little word will therefore be for both families and our dear friends. I will arrive with proud joy in my heart. I respectfully kiss the hands of the ladies and embrace the gentlemen with all my heart. Eugène."
You see, dear René, that we were worrying unnecessarily about the fate of your friend, based on what Mr. Lecouteux had told me, as he has faced great dangers since they last met, but he is saved and we will surely see him again by the 15th [...]. Signed "OBERLIN."
"You may already know that poor Charles de Cologne died of a putrid fever in Smolensk, it is a real loss [...]."
