Army of the South. AUTOGRAPH LETTER SIGNED BY SERGEANT BELLANGER TO MR. FAULTRIER DU LION D'ANGERS, Montauban, May 11, 1814. 18856-1
Sergeant Bellanger, 40th regiment, 2nd battalion, 4th company, 5th division, Army of the South, stationed in Montauban. An interesting letter after the Emperor's abdication. It is addressed to "Mr. / Mr. Faultrier, owner in Lion d'Angers, Department of Maine-et-Loire in Lion d'Angers."
The sergeant begins his correspondence by inquiring about the health of his correspondent and states that his personal health is fairly good.
[...]"... I must tell you that they say we are Royalists now and that the Emperor has been deported to the Isle of Elba. Some say he has fled to Turkey, so we are not sure to whom we belong; many people desert every day, including from our regiment. There were still 1500 men after the Battle of Toulouse, now there are barely three hundred left and the rest have deserted, all in tears have done the same, so soon there are more officers than soldiers. We are not paid, which is why I ask you to send me the 26 francs for the quarter to help me survive, as we are worse off than during wartime. But let's hope this won't last long; they promise leaves for the old soldiers, my turn should come soon [...]
