Army of Aragon. LETTER FROM A. DE LACROIX (LA CROZE?), captain in the 13th Cuirassiers, TO HIS COUSIN PHILIPINE residing in Sarreguemines (Moselle), La Puebla on December 25, 1811. 18855-20
Letter addressed to "Madame Bouillant Née Bouron in Sarreguemines / Moselle". The captain writes to his cousin Philipine, recounting his daily life, his initial impressions of Spain and the Spaniards, reminding her that he was one of the main actors in the Battle of Sagunto (Sagonte) and their departure towards Valencia.
Remnants of a red wax seal.
"At La Puebla on December 25, 1811"
"My departure was so rushed that I could not, my dear Cousin, come to embrace you before leaving the country; having always been on the move since that time, I have not been able to write to you. I am taking advantage of a brief moment of tranquility, which will not last long, it seems, to tell you, dear Cousin, how much I love you and all that belongs to you. [...]
Spain is not nearly as formidable as one likes to say, I assure you. With caution, one is perfectly safe here. You can travel without fear, armed indeed, but alone, one or two leagues from your cantonment; the whole country here is flat, and the guerillas (armed peasants) would never dare to attack a horseman, even if they were seven or eight. The people are very timid, and a single Frenchman can make four of them run just with a few blows of a whip.
You have undoubtedly read the details of the Battle of Sagunto *, in which I played a part. Without my cuirass, I would not have the pleasure of writing to you. It was pierced by a ball at the heart. I suffered from a severe contusion which caused me pain for about ten days, but I no longer feel it.
We have just been given orders to leave for Valencia. I believe tomorrow or the day after, we will be playing at Casse geule. Beware, poor Spaniards.
Farewell my dearest cousin [...] you are the only one from all of Louise's family who supported me through everything and against all odds. Give Bouillant my regards [...].
Signed: A. De Lacroix (?), Captain in the 13th Cuirassiers. Army of Aragon.
Good condition, foxing, a tear with loss at the level of the wax seal (two missing words).

* The Battle of Sagunto took place on October 25, 1811 near the town of the same name, in the province of Valencia in Spain. It pitted the Napoleonic Marshal Louis Gabriel Suchet leading the Army of Aragon, sent by Napoleon I, against General Joaquín Blake y Joyes, leading the Spanish army.
The battle ended in a decisive victory for Suchet.
