HISTORICAL NOTE:
The 1816 reward sabers are actually the former sabers of the Second Company of Musketeers, model 1814, known as the "Black Musketeers". In 1816, upon the disbandment of the two Musketeer companies, the decision was made to use the remaining sabers of the Second Company still in storage to transform them into reward sabers. To do this, the Musketeers' cross present on the hilt was removed and a silver-plated copper medallion stamped with the Great Arms of France was riveted on. The blade, which was originally unadorned (without any engravings), now bore the engraving "VIVE LE ROI" ("Long Live the King"). This explains why the back of the blade is originally engraved with the name of the manufacturer and dated 1814, the year of the establishment of the Second Company of Musketeers of the Royal Military Household.
