BIOGRAPHY:
François-Pierre DAUGUET, farmer in the commune of Saint-James, Captain in the Basse Normandie corps of the Royal Army of the West.
HISTORY:
The 1816 reward sabers are, in fact, the former sabers of the Second Company of the Musketeers, model 1814, known as the "Mousquetaires Noirs." In 1816, when the two Musketeer companies were disbanded, it was decided to use the remaining sabers of the Second Company still in stock and transform them into reward sabers. To achieve this, the Musketeers' cross on the hilt was removed, and a silvered copper medallion stamped with the Great Arms of France was riveted on. The chape was engraved with the inscription "Given by the King to Mr...," and the blade, which was originally unmarked (without any engraving), is now engraved with "LIVE THE KING."
This explains why the back of the blade is originally engraved with the name of the manufacturer and dated 1814, the year of the establishment of the Second Company of the Musketeers of the Royal Military Household.
