Soldier Renard thanks his mother for the news he received with pleasure. He informs her that he spent some time in the hospital with jaundice. He wishes her a happy new year. (Phonetic writing, translated excerpt below).

With what pleasure I received your letter, especially as it informed me that you are all well. I received your letter while I was in the hospital for jaundice, now I am very well. I forgot to tell you that I received the 6 francs you sent me in Brest, for which I thank you. How much I wish I could personally wish you a happy year, perfect health, a long life, all sorts of prosperity, it will be my only consolation..."
