SIGNED AUTOGRAPH LETTER BY JEAN ALLOYAU, embarked on Le Duguesclin, Escaut Squadron, TO HIS BROTHER, January 14, 1812. 18855-10
Letter with address "Monsieur René Allain residing in the small Paris commune of Luxe Canton of La Flèche department of Le Mans in Sarthe". With postmark "GHENT", dry postal stamp.
Jean Alloyau, of the 56th Line Regiment, is embarked on Le Duguesclin, Escaut Squadron, anchored in Antwerp. He writes to his brother to wish him a happy new year and give him news. He informs him that he has been spending the winter in the port of Antwerp for about eight months, having the responsibility of guarding the squadron's gunpowder in a small village called Philipine, a rather peaceful village (near Ghent). Life is expensive there, "I wish you a happy new year, I hope it will be better than the one we are leaving behind because I must tell you that everything is excessively costly, I believe the same is said in France," he says.
He asks for news of the family and provides his address "Jean Alloyau 2nd Company of the 5th Battalion of the 56th Line Regiment embarked on Le Duguesclin, Escaut Squadron anchored in Antwerp".
