"Ecija, April 1, 1811.
My dear Mother,
I am sorry, I have tried everything to send you what I promised, but no one wanted to help me... Our colonel just wrote to the depot to bring the money that we are owed from the Cross, I am now owed 875 francs and 533 francs that I advanced to the regiment, 600 francs from my salary without counting many more than a hundred Louis...
I enjoy excellent health... We are in a fairly good country. We are quite peaceful here except for some bands of bandits that we have to chase quite frequently. As for me, I never leave the garrison. I am very happy here. I am staying with very kind people and the daughter of the house has such a good heart that she cannot refuse me anything..."
He asks for his letters to be sent to him in Cordoba, Andalusia."
